It is imperative that the cold flow properties, which include cloud and pour point, freezing point, and a few others, of lubricants and oils be known when an engine or instrument is operated at very low temperatures.

If oils operate at or below their cloud and pour points, then serious damage can occur to the equipment due to the lubricants’ inability to flow. Therefore, it is paramount for the cloud and pour points to be both accurate and clear so that these suboptimal operating conditions can be avoided.
